Day 1: Your Whales & Wilderness Kayak Adventure begins at one of Quadra Island’s spectacular resorts
Nestled on acres of lush coastal landscape on spectacular Quadra Island, B.C., Gowlland Harbour Oceanfront Resort, is a hidden gem.
Featured for its outstanding cuisine in National Geographic Travel’s ’50 Places of a Lifetime: Canada this little known Discovery Islands boutique resort is a hidden paradise on the West Coast of Canada.

(Note: on Day 1 costs for meals and activities on Quadra Island are extra; space at Gowlland Harbour Resort is limited, so best to book early. If the resort if fully booked accommodations at another Quadra resort will be arranged)
Day 2: First Venture into the Wilderness – Bears and Rapids!
Guests arriving in June – August will be treated to a half-day Wildlife/Rapids tour.
On this trip you will head into the Discovery Passage where bears forage for rock crabs on the shorelines at low tide in spring and early summer and Dalls Porpoise and Sea Lions are often sighted as they pursue herring and salmon throughout the summer.
“On our 4-hour trip we were entertained by bald eagles, dolphins, harbour seals, one sea lion, and the very best was saved for last…..our thrill rides through the deep rapids. “
Travelling aboard a high-speed covered boat, once you arrive in the Orford River Valley the Holmalco First Nation will invite you onto their traditional territory.
Once there you will climb up onto their bear viewing platforms for an unobstructed view of Grizzly Bears as they roam the river banks and feed on the spawning salmon.
“Before we had even got to the first viewing platform a bear was spotted …We had fantastic views of mums with cubs …including the cutest baby bears floating down the river!”
Our Wilderness and Bear tours are operated by Campbell River Whale Watching and Adventure Tours, one of the leading operators in the West Coast’s Discovery Passage.
Day 3-6: Remote Camping & Kayaking at Wildcoast’s Orca Camp: Whales, Wilderness, Glamping
During the 4-day camping and kayaking expedition portion of this trip, you will stay in our remote camping spot on Vancouver Island, Orca Camp, specially designed for our kayak adventures.
“Just returned from orca camp and it was FABULOUS! Seriously can’t say enough good things! The guides were wonderful, the food was exceptionally good, the camp was great. I would go back in a heartbeat!”
This is where Orca and humpback whales spend their days throughout the summer. It is also the premier spot for viewing Orcas and kayaking in the killer whales backyard.
Orca Camp is an excellent way to see Orcas in their natural environment, while not disturbing the everyday activities of their lives.
During this glamping adventure you will kayak, sleep in safari tents, enjoy campfires and eat amazing food.
In addition, you will have the opportunity to participate in wilderness activities such as a native style sauna, plunging into the mountain-fed river, and venturing out on exploratory hikes.
Orca Camp is located next to a flowing stream, under a canopy of ancient cedars in the British Columbia rainforest.
Wildcoast Adventure’s Orca Camp boasts:
- Premier location: excellent whale watching opportunities, whether you are kayaking or relaxing at camp
- Daily kayak adventures
- Custom coastal cuisine designed by Gowlland Harbour Resort’s Gourmet Chef
- Large wood-heated, common area and dining tent
- Spacious safari sleeping tents on wood platforms with comfy beds
- Hot water showers
- High staff to guest ratio and maximum 12 guests
It’s an excellent launch point to go kayaking in killer whale territory!
Every day you will paddle waters deemed a critical habitat for Orca pods who spend their summers in and around the Robson Bight Reserve in Johnstone Strait, BC.
Killer whales in Johnstone Strait
Both resident and transient Orca pods frequent this area to feed on the abundant food sources of Johnstone Strait. During the summer months all Northern Resident pods congregate here to feed on the abundant migration of salmon.
Given their wild nature, you can never be guaranteed of seeing killer whales (orcas), however your chances to view them while kayaking or hanging out on the beach is incredibly high.
Day 6-7: Back to Civilization (almost)
Upon return to Gowlland Harbour Resort after your kayak adventure, you’ll return to the luxury of crisp linens and an outdoor hot tub in the peaceful beauty of the Resort’s waterfront location for your final night’s stay. There is no better way to cap off an amazing wilderness experience!
This is truly a Whales & Wilderness Kayak Adventure you don’t want to miss.
